FLYING TOMBSTONES
The building was erected in 1928/29 by architect Hans Heinrich Müller as a transformer station for the power supply of the Charlottenburg district in Berlin. With its steel skeleton construction and red clinker facade, it is a typical example of Berlin industrial architecture of the 1920s. An extension was built in 1951/53, in the 1980s, the plant was shut down. Between 1999 and 2001, the architects Petra and Paul Kahlfeldt refurbished it into a design centre, and today it is home to the MetaDesign design agency.
YOU WON'T BELIEVE YOUR EARS
Boulders floating weightlessly from the ceiling into the room, sequences of jagged wreaths are reminiscent of both, an industrial rubble chute and a classic chandelier — all striking objects in elegant white simplicity, an effective combination of art, design and noise absorbing quality made 100 per cent of PET or melamine resin foam.
